Stone wool, also known as mineral wool or rock wool, is created by spinning a molten stream of volcanic rock, steel furnace slag and recycled materials. It is used in construction for high thermal insulation and fire protection qualities. However, the utilization of the material has been unsolved. These material samples result from testing and experimenting with various techniques incorporating stone wool fibres in ceramic clay bodies and glazes, hoping to reduce raw material use and contribute to circularity. The high fibre content in a clay body makes it lighter and provides additional support during modelling. The fibrousness of stone wool remains even after mechanical processing and refiring, making it stand out from other ceramic additives such as sand and grog.
